Joe Cressy, the NDP candidate who ran against Liberal candidate Adam Vaughan in the federal byelection last month, is joining the race to fill Vaughan's vacated city council seat.

Vaughan left City Hall to run in the federal race for Trinity-Spadina, and beat Cressy in the June 30 byelection. Cressy was approximately 20 percentage points behind Vaughan.

Despite the loss, Cressy announced Wednesday morning that he will run in the municipal race to represent the residents of Ward 20, also called Trinity-Spadina.

"My career has always been driven by where we can get action on issues," Cressy said at a news conference Wednesday.

The Ward 20 seat is currently being held by retired civil servant Ceta Ramkhalawansingh until the Oct. 27 election.
