Officials say a massive blaze that gutted a historic church in Aurora, Ont., on Friday morning was accidental.

Central York Fire Services say the blaze, which broke out just after 10:30 a.m. Friday morning, was likely caused by roofers working to repair areas of Aurora United Church.

It took 14 fire trucks and about 60 firefighters to put out the blaze.

The church, which was built in 1878, was a beloved cornerstone of the community and a historic landmark.

Two fire crews were still on the scene Saturday morning, making sure the flames were completely out.

Demolition crews have also arrived and are working with fire officials to knock down certain parts of the church in order to access remaining hotspots.

Officials say it is not likely charges will be laid in connection to the incident.

The church released a statement on their website Friday afternoon, thanking residents for their support.

“Thank you to everyone for the outpouring of support in the wake of the fire at our church this morning,” the statement read. “Know that all of our staff are safe.”

Meanwhile, nearby Trinity Anglican Church has opened its doors to parishioners in wake of the tragedy.

Members of Aurora United Church usually hold a “Rise n Shine Community Breakfast” on Saturday mornings but, due to extensive damage cause by the blaze, Trinity Church has offered to host the breakfast at their church instead.

“Trinity Anglican Church has been wonderful,” Carol Lever, a member of Aurora United Church, told CP24.

“They’ve opened their arms to us, we’re invited to come (to service) this Sunday. It might be a little different for us being in an Anglican church, but Aurora United Church is more than a building; we are the hands and feet of the Lord and we’re here to serve our community,” she added.

The Ontario Fire Marshal’s Office was notified of the incident but has decided to not launch an investigation.
