All lanes of the eastbound Highway 401, west of Port Hope, Ont., have been reopened after a coach bus caught fire on Monday.
Shortly before noon, Ontario Provincial Police and Port Hope firefighters responded to calls of a vehicle fire near an ONroute service centre at Wesleyville Road.
By the time emergency crews arrived, the bus was engulfed in flames.
Nearly 50 Australian seniors had to be evacuated, but no injuries have been reported. Some of the passengers have been taken to Ottawa, their original destination, in another bus.
The remains of the damaged bus have been towed to a yard for further inspection.
The Newtonville Hwy. 401 exit and two right-hand lanes that were affected by the fire have also reopened.
The lanes were temporarily closed because police said they needed to be repaved. It was estimated the repaving would take between 12 and 15 hours, but OPP officials say it was completed ahead of schedule.
The cause of the fire is not yet known.
