Toronto police are searching for a driver after finding a collection of firearms, including a machine gun with a silencer, in an abandoned vehicle in North York.

The crash occurred on Transit Road, near Allen Road and Wilson Avenue, shortly after 4 a.m. on Friday.

Few details have been released, but police said a Mercedes C55 AMG struck a curb in the area. The vehicle was abandoned on the road.

Police searched the vehicle and found various firearms inside. A police source told CTV Toronto that a handgun with a silencer, a second handgun and a machine gun with a silencer were found inside the vehicle. There was also some religious material found, but it is not considered to be significant to the investigation at this point.

Additional officers, a helicopter and the emergency task force were called in to aid in the search for the driver, and anyone else that may have been in the vehicle at the time. Police were seen walking near the crash site armed with shotguns.

Officers said the vehicle was seized as part of a criminal investigation.
