A driver has been charged and his vehicle impounded after he was caught driving nearly 60 km/h over the speed limit in Richmond Hill on Sunday.

York Regional Police said the driver was seen speeding by an officer shortly before 9:30 p.m. in the area of Highway 7 and Yonge Street.

The grey BMW was travelling east on Highway 7 when a police radar registered his speed at 137 km/h. The speed limit in the area is 80 km/h.

The driver, a 23-year-old from Oakville, was charged with stunt driving and speeding. His car was impounded for a week.

Police have released dashcam video on YouTube showing the incident and are asking drivers to call 911 if they witness dangerous-driving practices.

Witnesses are asked to report the vehicle's location, direction of travel, make, model, licence plate number and driver description, if possible.

"Excessive speed has consistently been the greatest contributing factor in many fatal collisions that have occurred on York Region roads," police wrote on YouTube.

"Street racers put themselves and unsuspecting road users at risk of death or serious injury when they choose to disobey traffic laws."
