Toronto rapper Drake surprised thousands of students at Ryerson University on Friday night after appearing on stage unannounced at the Students’ Union parade.
The initial program for the event made no mention of Drake. The headliner was Future, a rapper Drake is rumoured to be working with.

Drake was also joined by 73-year-old city councillor Norm Kelly, who has referred to the Toronto-born rapper as a “Canadian hero.”
Within minutes, students attending the event took to social media to express their excitement about the surprise appearance.

To all the other university's who make fun of Ryerson, I'm sure @Drake would disagree ... Definitely not a @RyersonProblem

Kelly and Drake formed an unlikely relationship on social media after Kelly defended Drake during a Twitter feud with Philadelphia rapper Meek Mill.
After Meek Mill wrote online that Drake “don’t write his own raps,” Kelly came to the Toronto-born rapper’s defence, telling Meek Mill he was “no longer welcome in Toronto.” Kelly’s tweet was retweeted thousands of times, garnering a response from Meek Mill.
You're no longer welcome in Toronto, @MeekMill.

Kelly was also invited to join Drake for his sixth annual OVO Fest in Toronto over the August long weekend, but was on vacation. Instead, Drake honoured Kelly at OVO by ending his Meek Mill “diss” set with a giant, back-to-back photo of the councillor.
