A thirsty brown pup was rescued from the Scarborough Bluffs on Sunday afternoon after being stuck for hours. But now authorities are trying to determine who the dog belongs to.

Kristen Shmanka was out for an evening walk with her husband on Saturday when they noticed what they thought was a “wild animal” stuck on the Bluffs.

“When we looked again, we realized it was a dog,” Shmanka said.

After Shmanka made calls to animal services, fire crews arrived on scene to try and rescue the stranded dog.

“Everyone was working to get the dog to come up, they were here for hours,” Shmanka said.

As it got dark, the rescue effort became too dangerous. But fire crews weren’t ready to give up. They arrived back at the scene Sunday morning and rappelled down to bring the dog to safety.

“I went down and he was friendly,” said Ian Ollerenshaw, with Toronto Fire, who rappelled down the Bluffs.

“He seemed pretty hungry,” Ollerenshaw added.

After the dog was brought to safety, fire crews put the dog on a leash and gave it water.

Authorities are now trying to determine who owns the dog, as no one has come forward it claim it.

Shmanka says she was holding back tears as the dog was pulled to safety.

“Such a happy ending. I can barely keep it together, I’m so happy the dog was rescued,” she said.

“It’s a good news story.”
