A small dog that was trapped in an old septic tank for days last week has been reunited with the firefighters who rescued him.

Benny, a four-year-old Wheaten Terrier, was pulled from underneath a partially in-ground swimming pool near Weston Road and Humber Boulevard North on Friday after being trapped for three days.

Firefighters in the west end used a GoPro camera attached to a pole and lowered it down the five-foot hole. Benny was found tucked away in a corner, covered in mud.

After a three-hour rescue operation, which involved luring the dog with food and a squeaky toy, Benny and his owner Audrey Fantauzzi were reunited.

On Wednesday, both Fantauzzi and Benny visited the firefighters who rescued him.

"Benny was probably in there for about an hour or so," Capt. Brian Scriver told CTV Toronto.

Benny’s owner said her dog has since recovered from the ordeal.

"He’s been doing really well except that he doesn’t like going out in the dark," Fantauzzi told CTV Toronto.

She said the hole to the septic tank has been temporarily covered, and she plans on filling it in when the weather warms up.
