Canadian Auto Worker activists have gathered in downtown Toronto on Monday to protest claims that a company has refused severance pay to laid-off workers.

Scores of union members joined protesters outside the offices of Catalyst Capital Group at the Royal Trust Tower at 77 King Street West, near Bay Street.

Protesters stood in unison and waved blue CAW flags Monday morning while others carried placards reading, "It's time to talk."

According to CAW, Catalyst is the private equity firm acting as a secured lender to Snowbear, the country's largest manufacturer or utility trailers and snowplows.

Snowbear recently shut down production in its Guelph plant, leaving 36 CAW Local 1917 members out of work, the union said in a statement.

The union said Catalyst is trying to sell the company's assets but has not given laid-off workers assurance they will receive the approximately $500,000 in severance payments they are still owed.

Motorists in the downtown core may be affected by higher-than-average pedestrian traffic on King Street, between Bay and York Streets.
