A 14-year-old boy remains in stable, but critical condition at Sick Kids Hospital after he was struck by a vehicle in Markham Saturday evening.

The incident happened at McCowan Road and Bur Oak Avenue around 6:40 p.m., York Regional Police said.

“Initial reports from witnesses state that the driver had a green light and right of way and that a pedestrian ran across the street in front of the vehicle,” Acting Sgt. Peter Kalpouzos told CP24 at the scene.

The boy was struck by a Honda minivan, hitting the hood and then the windshield, police said.

Paramedics arrived at the scene and rushed the boy to hospital with life-threatening injuries.

The woman who was driving the van remained at the scene. Police said the woman was very distraught, but cooperative.

Police said the intersection of McCowan and Bur Oak Drive is expected to be shut down for several hours as the Collision Investigation Unit looks into the incident.
