A body has been recovered from the Humber River near the Old Mill Bridge, Toronto police confirm.

Officers have taped off a section of the riverbank in Etienne Brule Park.

Police have not confirmed the person's identity.

It is not known if the body is that of a man who was swept away when he tried to rescue his dog in the fast-moving and rain-swollen river at Lion's Park, near Lawrence Avenue West and Weston Road, last Wednesday.

The dog was able to get out of the river on its own, but the man disappeared in the turbulent water as he was carried away by the current. At the time, the river was flowing higher and faster than normal because of heavy rain.

Firefighters and police officers searched into the evening hours Wednesday, but they were forced to abandon the search because of darkness and safety concerns.

The search resumed Thursday morning, but they were still unable to find the man.
