A baby who was removed from his mother’s womb following a fatal drive-by shooting in Jamestown earlier this month remains in stable but serious condition.
Candice Rochelle Bobb was 24 weeks pregnant when the car she was riding in was shot several times.
Bobb was rushed to Etobicoke General Hospital and was later pronounced dead. The baby was removed from Bobb’s womb via emergency C-section.
On Thursday, the family of Bobb issued a statement through Toronto police and confirmed the medical status of the baby remains the same.
“The baby, a boy, was born at 24 weeks,” the statement reads. “While he continues to gain weight, he is currently in serious, but stable condition.”
The family said a funeral service will be held for Bobb on Thursday and Friday in Brampton but have asked for privacy during this time.
A small vigil was also held for Bobb on Sunday by faith leaders and members of the Jamestown community.
The shooting has spurred police to address the apparent on-going violence in the Jamestown neighbourhood.
“Public outrage will not be enough,” Toronto police Chief Mark Saunders told reporters at a news conference last Tuesday. “If translated into tangible action, with all parts of the community working together, we can and will make that positive difference.”
Saunders said that Bobb’s murder is a “very solvable case.”
So far, police have not release any information pertaining to potential suspects in the shooting.
As of May 17, there have been 29 homicides in the city in 2016 comparded with 15 at this point in 2015, and 20 at this point in 2014. The number of gun homicides has also risen by more than 200 per cent.
