A woman has been arrested in connection with a violent jewelry store robbery that took place in Vaughan last year.

The holdup occurred at a family-owned store located at 5010 Steeles Ave. W., just east of Martin Grove Road, shortly before 8:30 p.m. on Aug. 1.

Security footage of the incident showed that two female suspects entered the store, appearing to browse items on display.

A short time later, the women produced a handgun and a Taser, and police said they demanded the store owner hand over the jewelry.

The owner refused, and one of the suspects used the Taser, police said. A single round was then fired off, but the shot missed the store owner, tearing through a door.

The women then turned their attention to the owner's 11-year-old daughter, police said. According to witnesses, one of the women pointed the gun at the girl and pulled the trigger multiple times, but the firearm "failed to fire" for unknown reasons.

Three male suspects then tried to enter the store, but were unable to because the security system had been triggered. The female suspects grabbed some jewelry and fled the scene with the men in a four-door, dark coloured BMW, police said.

On Wednesday, York Regional Police said one of the suspects had been arrested as a result of tips from the public.

Katrina Vanderwyk, 24, has been charged with two counts of attempted murder, two counts of assault with a weapon, three counts of forcible confinement, robbery, robbery with a firearm and possession of a dangerous weapon.

Police are still looking for four suspects. One is described as a black female, aged 22 to 27, with short black hair. She was wearing a black, grey and white shawl with a lightning bolt design, a grey shirt, sunglasses, white socks and black shoes at the time of the robbery.

Police are also looking for a black male who was dressed in black, wearing sunglasses and white gloves and carrying a black duffel bag. The third suspect is described as a black male dressed in black and wearing a red baseball cap, and the fourth is a black male dressed in black and wearing white gloves.

The investigation is ongoing, and anyone with more information is asked to contact police at 1-866-876-5423, ext. 6631, or Crime Stoppers anonymously at 1-800-222-8477 (TIPS).
