Yonge Street, which begins near the shores of Lake Ontario in downtown Toronto, used to be considered the longest street in the world. Until 1999, the Guinness Book of Records stated that Yonge was 1,896 kilometres long, but the Guinness publishers were including the rest of Ontario's Highway 11. Yonge Street itself is actually only 56 kilometres long.
