Looking for a spot to escape the heat and humidity that blankets Toronto every summer?

Though Toronto residents love to complain about the chilly winter temperatures, they're often left longing for cooler days when the temperatures skyrocket in the city.

When the mercury climbs past 30 C, many are left wondering: what's the best place to escape the heat on a sweltering summer day?

Here's a roundup of 10 "hidden gems" and other suggestions from Toronto-based writers and reporters at CTV News:

R.C. Harris Water Treatment plant

The R.C. Harris Water Treatment plant is beautiful and located right on Lake Ontario (at the very end of Queen Street East). There is a little stretch of sand where people can lay out next to the lake, where it’s technically cooler, and I see people kayaking and canoeing in the area all the time. – Marlene Leung, CTVNews.ca writer

Evergreen Brick Works

Get your kids to cool down by getting their hands wet at the Children's Garden in Chimney Court at the Evergreen Brick Works. Children are invited to plant, weed and water the plants and they’re sure to make a splash when they fill the watering cans from the giant tub filled with water. And when it gets really hot, the Brick Works will build activities around water.

Tip: If you blink you might miss it, but, there’s also a small opening under some bushes to the right of the Watershed Wall for the younger set, called the Toddler Garden. If you let them wander through the opening to this Secret Garden, your little ones will find smaller chairs just right for their size where they can lounge in the shade. And if you get really lucky, the sprinklers may even be on.

Be sure to consult the website for opening hours before heading down. – Mary Nersessian, CTVNews.ca producer

Sherbourne Common

"Nobody knows about it because it's surrounded by industry and construction. It’s nice and clean with some water features. There's also Alexander Muir Memorial Gardens. Calm and serene." – Maurice Cacho, CTVNews.ca producer
