A woman in her 20s is facing alcohol-related charges after a fatal hit-and-run incident in North York.

The collision occurred at Finch Avenue West and Tobermory Drive, just east of Jane Street, shortly after midnight on Thursday morning, Toronto police said.

A 44-year-old man was biking along Finch when he was struck by a westbound BMW, which police say was travelling at a high speed.

Police said the bicycle was torn apart by the crash, and the cyclist was thrown approximately 30 metres, striking a pole. The driver fled the scene, and the cyclist succumbed to his injuries.

Police said the driver was arrested a short time later, in the area of Jane Street and Portage Parkway, approximately five kilometres north of the crash scene. The driver’s vehicle sustained extensive damage, including a shattered windshield and a crushed front bumper.

A 22-year-old woman was taken into police custody in connection with the incident, Toronto Police Const. Clint Stibbe said.

The woman, a Richmond Hill resident identified as Darya Selinvich, has been charged with failing to stop after an accident causing death, flight while being pursued by police, refusing a breath sample causing death, driving while disqualified, criminal neglience causing death, dangerous operation causing death, impaired operation causing death.

Selinvich, whose licence had already been suspended due to two unpaid fines, appeared briefly at College Park Court on Thursday. She has been ordered to remain in police custody and is expected to make another court appearance via video on Friday.

Selinvich was also previously charged for impaired driving in 2013. That charge was later withdrawn by the Crown in 2014.

As a result of the crash, Finch Avenue was closed to traffic between Jane and Keele Streets.

Stibbe said investigators were looking at the large debris field left by the "traumatic" collision.

"It's going to be devastating for the family that the (cyclist) is not going to be coming home tonight."

Police are hoping to speak to anyone who witnessed the crash. They say they will also be reviewing surveillance video from the scene.
