TORONTO - Acclaimed Canadian violinist Jonathan Crow is the new concertmaster of the Toronto Symphony Orchestra.

The TSO made the announcement Wednesday, noting Crow's first performance with the orchestra will be at its 90th season opening night concert on Sept. 22.

Born in Prince George, B.C., Crow, 33, is an orchestral and chamber musician who was a founding member of the New Orford String Quartet.

Between 2002 and 2006, he was concertmaster of the Montreal Symphony Orchestra.

During his time there, he was the youngest concertmaster of a major North American orchestra.

Crow is currently associate professor of violin at the Schulich School of Music of McGill University.

In his first season at the TSO, he'll perform for as many as 14 concert weeks as he transitions from his teaching schedule.

Crow plans to move to Toronto prior to the start of the TSO season, with his wife and two children.

The TSO's last concertmaster, Jacques Israelievitch, retired at the end of the '07/'08 season.
