A TTC passenger video of a bus driver behind the wheel with one foot on the dashboard while eating from a bag of potato chips, has prompted the TTC to launch an investigation.

The video was taken by high school student Gabriel Cordova while on the 34A bus during rush hour on Eglinton Avenue near Mount Pleasant Road sometime last week.

Cordova, who provided the video to CP24, said the bus was “very packed” when he boarded and that it took him a few minutes into his trip to notice what the driver was doing.

“It was only after a minute or two when everyone had settled in when I realized this driver has been driving this way the whole time,” Cordova told Newstalk1010 Tuesday morning.

In the short video, a TTC bus driver can be seen with his left foot resting on the dashboard as he steers the wheel with his right wrist. He simultaneously uses his left hand to tuck into a bag of chips.

Cordova said he “absolutely” felt unsafe while on board.

“He totally was not paying attention to the road; his hands were not on the steering wheel,” he told Newstalk1010.

“Should he have hit a pothole or something like that – Eglinton has so much construction – it would have been so detrimental for our safety, we would not have been able to swerve to safety.”

Cordova, whose trip was approximately 10 minutes from where he boarded, said the driver was still positioned the same way when he got off.

Speaking with the Toronto Star Monday, TTC spokesperson Brad Ross said the actions of the driver do not display what the transit corporation “considers appropriate.”

Though all TTC operators are allotted a lunch break and are permitted to snack while on the job, Ross told the Star that they are only encouraged to do so when the vehicle is stopped.

TTC union president Bob Kinnear went on to suggest that the driver may have had a cramping issue with his leg which could explain – though not condone -- the position the video shows him in.

Cordova said he never took the video with the intention of getting the driver in trouble.

“I certainly hope he doesn’t get penalized too heavily but would really like if the TTC brought to his attention how his behaviour was jeopardizing not only his safety but the safety of all the passengers on the bus,” he said.

The TTC is currently trying to identify the driver and will determine any repercussions.
