Motorists east of Toronto had to contend with a major traffic jam when a truck crashed into a concrete barrier during Thursday morning's commute.

The backlog of vehicles extended several kilometres due to intermittent closures of Highway 401's westbound collectors and express lanes at Whites Road in Pickering.

After hitting the barrier at about 5:50 a.m., the truck wound up on its side and pieces of concrete were scattered across the road. Several vehicles were damaged and it took about three hours to clean up the mess.

Non-life-threatening injuries were reported in the multi-vehicle crash.
