Toronto starts weekend off with overnight snowfall
Toronto saw a blast of winter weather kick off the weekend, with up to 10 centimetres of snow by Saturday morning.
The snow started falling on Friday evening and continued throughout the overnight hours.
Toronto Pearson says it saw eight centimetres of snowfall overnight and expects about another centimetre to fall Saturday morning. The airport adds that it doesn't "anticipate the continuing snowfall to impact operations."
Milder conditions are on tap for the rest of the weekend, with daytime highs of 1 C on Saturday and – 1 C on Sunday.
Environment Canada ended the weather advisory on early Saturday morning for parts of east Toronto.
The weather agency warned motorists of unsafe driving conditions due to the snow.
Travel along Highway 401 could be hazardous during the morning hours on Saturday, the advisory said.
Due to the harsh weather, the city is activating five warming centres for people experiencing homelessness. Additionally, two more sites will be opened if the temperature drops below -15 C.
Here's a list of the operational warming centre locations:
- 136 Spadina Road (Downtown)
- 55 John Street (Metro Hall)
- 75 Elizabeth Street (Near City Hall)
- 12 Holmes Avenue (North York)
- 885 Scarborough Golf Club Road
The city also has three 24-hour respite sites, including a 300-bed program at the Better Living Centre, which aim to be operational until April.
