‘Mama is waiting for you’: Woman appeals for return of 3-year-old son after ex-husband failed to bring him back to Canada

The mother of a three-year-old Toronto boy is urging her former husband who is wanted in a parental abduction investigation to bring their son back to Canada from India.

“This is not about you. This is not about me. This is only about him,” a tearful Camila Vilas Boas told CP24 Thursday night.

“We are adults. We can deal with our problems, but he’s just growing up. He’s just a baby, and all he needs is to be protected, and that’s our job: to protect him, not hurt him.”

Boas made her appeal hours after Toronto police revealed that her ex-husband, 48-year-old Kapil Sunak, allegedly did not return to Canada with their three-year-old son after a trip to India, and as a result, he is now wanted for abduction by parent/custody order.

Police said Sunak and his son, Valentino, travelled to Delhi in July. He was ordered by the court to return to Canada with his son on Aug. 8 but failed to do so.

Police told CTV News in an email that Sunak and his son are believed to still be in India.

Sunak is described by police as six-foot-three, with short brown hair and facial hair. Valentino is four-feet tall, with brown hair and brown eyes.

Boas is appealing to anyone with information to contact police.

“He needs a family that protects him and be back in Canada, where he was born, where he has his friends, a family, and this is all I want: my baby back home, that’s all I want,” she said.

Boas asserted that she didn’t know about the trip to India until after they had gone.

“The entire time I knew something was wrong, because he sold the house, he sold his car, he sold everything,” she claimed.

Despite that, Boas said she still tried to believe that the two were on vacation and that her son would eventually return.

“The time gone, and I start to realize this never was a vacation. And just have to deal with this every day is a torture. I have no words,” she said, her voice breaking.

Boas shared that the last time she spoke to Valentino was during a video call, and her son asked her if he could come home.

“It was breaking my heart, because all he wants is to come home, and (there’s) nothing I could do to bring him back,” she said. Boas explained that while she desperately wants to fly to India to grab her Valentino, she fears for her safety there.

She said she is in contact with Canadian officials in India who informed her that her son is in the country.

Boas couldn’t stop the tears from flowing when she talked about her son while inside his room.

“I don’t come here because I have to be hard and I have to be strong to fight for me. Coming inside of this room, just breaks me down,” she said, sharing that she only goes to the room every Sunday to pray for his son’s safe return.

Boas added that every time she is in the room, all she could see is her son jumping on the bed and asking him if they can get a pizza or a muffin.

Valentino, she said, loves dinosaurs. He has dinosaur toys, and his room has dinosaur pictures on the wall.

“Mama is waiting for you,” Boas said when asked what she wanted to say to Valentino. “His dinosaurs, they’re all waiting for you, too.”
