Toronto police closed an east-end intersection for a few hours Saturday to investigate a collision that killed a five-year-old girl last month.
Police shut down the corner of East Haven and Cliffside drives for about three hours to do some more work in their investigation into the March 7 crash that killed Kayleigh Callaghan-Belanger.
The girl was struck by a garbage truck while she was on her way home from school with her 13-year-old babysitter, a six-year-old boy and another child.
The babysitter and the boy suffered non-life-threatening injuries.
As part of Saturday's investigation, police parked the garbage truck at the spot of the crash as they recorded video of the intersection and gauged the sight lines from the driver's seat, said traffic services Const. Clint Stibbe.
It was the same garbage truck that was involved in the collision, he said.
Stibbe said a reconstruction team did not record video on the day of the crash because it was dark outside when the team arrived to gather evidence at the scene.
It is not unusual for police to return to a crash scene to record video, Stibbe told CP24.
Callaghan-Belanger was a senior kindergarten student at nearby Cliffside Public School.
Her family described her as a “beautiful, loving girl” who cared for her two sisters, loved to draw and adored cartoon princesses.
The City of Toronto garbage truck was being driven by a 64-year-old man, who was treated for shock after the collision.
Police continue to investigate to determine whether charges are warranted.
