A young girl was struck and killed by a garbage truck in Toronto’s east end Thursday afternoon.
The five-year-old child was pronounced dead at the scene.
Const. Clint Stibbe of the Toronto Police traffic services unit said a group of children was crossing the street around 3:45 p.m. near Cliffside Drive and East Haven Drive, when three kids were struck by a city garbage truck that was making a left turn.
A 13-year-old girl and a six-year-old boy were taken to Sick Kids Hospital with non-life threatening injuries. Another girl in the group was not injured.
The mother of the girl who died has been notified, Stibbe said.
Police have not released the names of any of the children involved.
Mayor Rob Ford said in a statement that he was “shocked and deeply saddened” to hear about the incident.
“It’s with a heavy heart that I extend my deepest condolences to the victims during this difficult time…We will do everything we can to assist the families.”
Ford also said the city will “cooperate fully” with the police investigation.
