The Toronto police officer accused of fatally shooting 18-year-old Sammy Yatim last summer on an empty streetcar has been committed to stand trial on a charge of second-degree murder.
Const. James Forcillo, who is free on $510,000 bail, is expected to stand trial next year. A preliminary inquiry held to determine if there was sufficient evidence in the case to go to trial wrapped up on Tuesday. All the evidence that was heard by Judge Richard LeDressay is under a publication ban.
Yatim was shot on July 27, 2013. The incident was caught by bystanders on cellphone videos that were later posted online. In the videos, police are heard shouting commands at Yatim to drop a knife. Police then fired nine gunshots at the TTC streetcar.
Forcillo was suspended with pay after the shooting. He returned to active duty in an administrative role in February.
