One person is dead after a driver ran a red light in the city's west end resulting in a three vehicle collision.

A 21-year-old man driving a white Toyota Corolla southbound failed to stop at the intersection of Islington Avenue and The Westway.

The Corolla crashed with an eastbound Honda which then smashed into a Mitsubishi SUV stopped at the intersection, waiting to head north on Islington Ave.

The occupant of the Honda, a 29-year-old, was killed instantly. The driver, a 21-year-old, was treated for minor air bag burn injuries while no one in the SUV was hurt.

Residents of the neighbourhood say collisions at the intersection are common.

A property on the north-west corner has bollards installed and heavy fencing after years of drivers crashing there.

A traffic camera was installed there to help enforce the speed limit, police said.

Police expect the investigation will continue into Saturday evening. No charges have yet been laid.
