A group of Toronto taxi drivers are requesting an emergency meeting at City Hall, asking officials to "enforce the law" and put an end to Uber's operations.
The Toronto Taxi Alliance held a news conference Thursday morning, in an effort to urge the city to agree to a meeting.
In a statement issued Thursday morning, the alliance said it's asking officials to "enforce the law regarding Uber, as France has done."
Earlier this week, the Uber France CEO and Uber Western Europe's general managers were arrested and charged with running an illegal taxi business.
Uber Toronto was in court with the city over the legality of the ride-sharing program last month. The city is seeking a permanent injunction on the company's operations, arguing that Uber should abide by the city's taxi regulations.
Uber officials argued its service connects passengers with drivers, saying the organization is a communication service, not a cab company.
On June 2, the judge told both parties that he expects the issue to go on to Ontario's Court of Appeals. He said he needed some time to come to a decision, but said it was unlikely he would order any immediate shutdown, since he believes any verdict will be appealed.
