TORONTO - Toronto police have arrested a suspect in the Boxing Day abduction and sexual assault of a four-year-old girl.

The girl, visiting from Connecticut, was taken from a North York home near Bathurst Street and Wilson Avenue in the middle of the night and assaulted. Family members found her wandering around nearby a short time later.

The suspect appeared in a Toronto courtroom briefly Sunday morning. Police aren't releasing his name or the charges against him and there is a publication ban on the court proceedings.

Residents of the North York neighbourhood told CTV Toronto Sunday they were relieved to learn of the arrest. Many said they have young children and feel safer now that a suspect is in custody.

Police are expected to release more information about the case at a news conference Tuesday.
