A "very intense" storm system is approaching the GTA, according to Environment Canada meteorologist Geoff Coulson.
The weather service issued a severe wind warning for Toronto and the Halton, Peel, York and Durham regions for Friday night and most of Saturday.
Winds with speeds of 60 km/h and gusts of 90 km/h are likely to start in the evening and last until Saturday afternoon, Environment Canada said in a severe weather statement. Along Lake Ontario, wind gusts may reach 100 km/h, Coulson said.
The GTA will be hit with the edge of the storm system that caused tornadoes in the southern and Midwest U.S. on Friday. Environment Canada is monitoring the storm system, but Coulson said the GTA is not at risk for tornadoes.
There may be thunderstorms Friday night or Saturday, but the biggest impact in southern Ontario will be the wind, said Coulson.
