A downtown stretch of Spadina Avenue was closed to traffic Tuesday morning after smoke was spotted inside a jewelry store.

Toronto fire crews rushed to the building on Spadina Avenue, near Dundas Street West, after receiving reports of smoke shortly after 9 a.m.

Toronto Fire Capt. Adrian Ratushniak said crews discovered a considerable amount of smoke and realized there was an active fire inside the building.

A total of 12 trucks and 40 firefighters have responded to the two-alarm fire.

Spadina Avenue remains closed northbound between Dundas Street West and St. Andrew Street as crews clear the scene of the fire.
