ST. THOMAS, Ont. - The Special Investigations Unit has been called in to probe the death of a woman who was in custody.

Provincial police in Elgin County say officers arrested the woman at about 7 p.m. Wednesday on an outstanding warrant.

Once in custody at the OPP detachment in St. Thomas, the woman went into medical distress.

She was taken to hospital and was later pronounced dead.

The woman's name and age have not yet been released, nor has any information been released on a possible cause of death.

The SIU investigates all police interactions that involve death, serious injury or allegations of sexual assault.
