SIU invokes mandate after officer-related shooting in Orillia, 1 dead, 1 seriously injured
The Special Investigations Unit (SIU) has invoked a mandate after an officer-related shooting in Orillia.
The incident happened just before 2 p.m. on Thursday.
Following reports of a complaint, the Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) were dispatched to a residence on Barrie Road. The suspect was located in the area of Cochrane Street and Matchedash Street South, where the SIU says he was armed with an edged weapon.
According to officials, the responding officer was stabbed during the encounter and suffered serious injuries.
"An officer was stabbed and there was a discharge of a firearm, multiple times," said Kristy Denette, a communications coordinator with the SIU. "That individual was taken by ambulance to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. There was another officer, I understand that discharged a conducted energy weapon."

The OPP Provincial Constable of Orillia indicated that the officer discharged their firearm and as a result, the person was pronounced dead at the hospital.
OPP released a tweet asking pedestrians and motorists to avoid the area around West Street South at Cochrane Street and Matchedash Street South at Cochrane Street.
Police say the officer remains in hospital in stable condition.
"It's always concerning when there's a discharge of a firearm...when there's an individual who's deceased," said Denette. "So that that prompts you to investigate."
A post mortem has been scheduled for Friday.
