Toronto animal shelters are marking Black Friday early by waiving the usual adoption fee for all black cats for a week.
Shelters are holding a cat adoption blitz, taking inspiration from U.S. retailers participating in the annual sales.
From Saturday, Nov. 22 to Sunday, Nov. 30, residents can take home any cat or kitten with any black colouring without paying the usual $75 adoption fee.
Research indicates that black cats and dogs are not adopted as quickly from shelters due to superstitions, the city said in a statement Friday.
More than 150 cats are up for adoption at the city's four shelters and adoption partner locations. All are spayed or neutered, micro-chipped, vet-checked and vaccinated.
New owners will still have to pay the pet licence fee, which is $15 or $7.50 for seniors.
