A school in Toronto's Don Mills neighbourhood was locked down on Thursday afternoon after a student reporting seeing someone with a gun near the property.

Police were called to George S. Henry Academy, located on Graydon Hall Drive near York Mills Road, at about 2 p.m.

Heavily armed emergency task force officers searched each classroom looking for a gunman. Each student was also checked for weapons.

About two hours after the incident began, police cancelled the lockdown. Some parents had waited outside for an hour before they could embrace their children.

"Everybody came out and she was not there, so I was not okay," said Savera Saifuddin, holding her niece. "Now she's okay and I'm okay."

Some students used their cellphones to figure out what was happening.

"Some of my friends called their siblings or friends and they also said that something serious is going on, so we took the situation seriously," said student Mirza Claik.

Police believe a gunman, possibly a student, may have been at the school. Detectives were investigating reports that the incident was a revenge visit after a student was knifed near the school a day earlier. Blood could be spotted on the sidewalk near George S. Henry.

Police were looking at school surveillance tapes in search of the suspect.
