Police have released the name of a driver that was killed Thursday on the Queen Elizabeth Way after an unidentified object crashed through his windshield.

Police said Miguel Pena of Mississauga then lost control of his Toyota Rav4, struck the centre guardrail and crossed all three westbound lanes into a wooded area near Mississauga Road.

He was pronounced dead at Oakville Trafalgar Hospital.

The crash, which happened around 8:15 a.m., closed the westbound lanes through the morning commute as police and fire crews cleared the scene.

The lanes were later reopened.

Police said they are investigating the incident and appealing for any witnesses to contact provincial police.
