A 21-year-old man drowned while trying to swim across a river in Ontario's cottage country on Saturday, according to police.

Officials said the man was swimming in the Muskoka River in Bracebridge, Ont., when he began to struggle and dropped below the surface of the water.

Several bystanders were unsuccessful in locating the man before an Ontario Provincial Police marine unit was called. The marine unit located the man's body after about half an hour.

The man has been identified as Rich Trespeces of Maple, Ont.
