Ontario police say they have located the driver involved in the tragic death of a woman crushed Thursday by a flying tractor-trailer tire on a major highway.
Officers from the Ontario Provincial Police highway safety division said on Friday that 54-year-old Miroslwa Chmielewski was killed after a tire flew off a passing tractor-trailer and smashed into her vehicle early Thursday morning.
OPP said on Friday that they had identified the driver of the tractor-trailer, which did not remain at the scene, but they have not released the person's name.
Const. Graham Williamson said it was too early to determine if charges would be laid. Officers would not comment on where the tractor-trailer was located.
The fatal accident happened along the Toronto-bound lanes of the Queen Elizabeth Way near the Burlington Skyway at about 6:45 a.m.
The tire flew off a southbound truck, crossing the highway before striking the Hamilton woman's northbound Honda Civic.
Chmielewski was alone in the vehicle and was pronounced dead at the scene.
Her distraught husband Marek Chmielewski told CTV News that the loss of his wife makes the Christmas season hard to handle.
"(She) was my best friend," he said on Thursday. "We were going to spend Christmas time with the family. Now everything has changed."
The couple had two grown sons as well as a daughter in university.
