A tornado was part of a storm that passed through the area northeast of London, Ont. over the weekend, officials have confirmed.

Ontario's first tornado of 2015 was caused by a combination of a cold front and a weather disturbance moving through southern Ontario on Sunday.

A barn was severely damaged approximately halfway between the communities of Thorndale and Bryanston, Environment Canada said in a statement on Thursday.

Nearby, several roofs and trees were damaged and an air conditioner was pushed off its pedestal on the roof of a shopping centre.

Upon further investigation, weather officials determined that the damage was caused by a tornado.

The tornado hit the area at approximately 2:30 p.m., Environment Canada said. It was rated at one out of five on the Enhanced Fujita scale, or EF1, with estimated wind speeds of 175 km/h.

The tornado is the first this year in Ontario. Last year, 19 tornadoes were reported in the province.
