TORONTO -- A legislative committee is directing Ontario's auditor general to investigate the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corp.'s expansion plans.

The OLG has cancelled the slots-at-racetracks program and embarked on a plan to build new casinos in the province.

The audit would look into whether there are any secret or one-off deals regarding casino hosting payments to municipalities -- an issue that's ignited a firestorm in the province.

It would also look into the cancellation of the $345-million-a-year share of slot machine revenues that went to the racetracks.

Watchdog Jim McCarter has also been asked to look into the OLG's plans for gaming facilities, bingo halls, online gaming and lotteries.

McCarter says he could start the probe this week, but that will delay other audits that are already underway.

The Liberals voiced concerns about making a "rash" decision to change McCarter's workload.

But the Progressive Conservatives and New Democrats say time is of the essence because the government's moves are killing the horse racing industry.
