The Mississauga, Ont., man who jumped into fast-moving water in cottage country to save his nine-year-old niece, has succumbed to his injuries in a Barrie, Ont., hospital.

Ghulam Badar, 53, was placed on life support after he was pulled from Bala Falls in the Muskoka region, west of Bracebridge, Ont. He died in hospital on Thursday night.

Badar and his brother, 44-year-old Nadim Shah, of Chicago, jumped into the water just before 2 p.m. Wednesday afternoon after noticing that the nine-year-old girl -- who had been playing near the water and wearing a life jacket -- had drifted away from shore.

Relatives said the brothers vanished under the water and became trapped a whirlpool.

When emergency service personnel arrived at the scene and pulled Badar and Shah from the water, both men were initially pronounced dead.

Shah died in the incident, but Badar was revived and remained in critical condition in hospital until his death. The nine-year-old girl survived.

Ontario provincial police confirmed Badar's death on Friday morning.

The two deaths follow three other drownings that happened at Moon River Falls on Sunday afternoon.

Peter Ludian, 21, who was visiting from Poland, Vladimir Tsimfer, 31, of Mississauga, and Vladimir Sirghi, 22, of Barrie, were cliff-jumping at the Moon River Falls when they died.
