Cristian Chis has been found guilty of first-degree murder in connection with the murder of his neighbour in 2011.

The skull of Peter Gavin, 67, was found in August 2011 in Whitchurch-Stouffville, approximately 20 kilometres south of his East Gwillimbury home. His disappearance was reported just days before his skull was found, but police said at the time that he'd likely been missing for approximately two months.

Gavin was a retired CN worker and farmer who had lived in East Gwillimbury for 40 years.

More than a year after his remains were found, police arrested Gavin's 28-year-old neighbour.

On Tuesday, Chis was found guilty of first-degree murder. In a statement Wednesday, York Regional Police said Chis was immediately sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole for 25 years.
