An Oakville neighbourhood was rocked by a natural gas explosion Wednesday afternoon that partially collapsed a home.

Police say a construction crew was working on a new addition at the back of a residence located on Sandlewood Road when a gas line was damaged and a part of the building caught fire. It happened at approximately 5 p.m.

Police say the owners were home at the time of the blast, but managed to safely exit the building. The work crew also managed to escape without injury.

The main gas line to Sandlewood Road was temporarily shut off. Approximately 60 homes were affected.

Police say a number of homes in the surrounding area were also temporarily evacuated.

The cause of the blast is under investigation.
