Two women are dead after separate car accidents on GTA roads over the past 24 hours.

A 27-year-old woman was killed early Tuesday morning when the SUV she was riding in crashed into a pedestrian island.

The accident happened just before 6 a.m. on Rexdale Boulevard near the Woodbine Racetrack.

A piece of the guardrail ripped through the car, striking the woman who was sitting in the passenger's seat. 

The woman, whose name has not been released, was rushed to Sunnybrook hospital but died shortly after arriving.

A 28-year-old man was arrested at the scene. Nenad Michael Matic, of Mississauga, has been charged with impaired driving causing death. He is to appear in court on Wednesday.

Police are investigating what caused the accident.

Monday morning, another life was claimed near Brampton.

A 31-year-old woman collided with an SUV in the Goreway Drive and Castlemore Road area.

Diana Richie, a resident of Maple, was rushed to Brampton Civic Hospital where she later died from her injuries.

Two other people suffered minor wounds in the crash.

A police officer was also injured as he directed traffic around the accident scene. An SUV struck him but he only suffered minor injuries.
