A man wanted in connection with the fatal stabbing and beating of a 24-year-old man in Toronto has been arrested in Alberta.
The 52-year-old male suspect had been living in Medicine Hat since the fall of 2012, police say. He was wanted on a Canada-wide search warrant in connection with the murder of George Fawell.
Fawell's body was discovered beside railroad tracks behind the Jimmie Simpson Community Centre on Queen Street, near Broadview Avenue, on August, 24, 2012
Police previously said Fawell was beaten and stabbed so viciously that investigators believed the attack continued after he died.
"The offenders…demonstrated a great deal of anger, rage and brutality in the attack on Mr. Fawell," Det.-Sgt. Gary Giroux told reporters nearly two years ago. "It was a completely unnecessary attack and it was so egregious that I suspect Mr. Fawell had passed away and the attack on his body continued."
Giroux said Fawell suffered multiple stab sounds to the chest and chopping wounds to the neck and head.
In a statement released on Thursday, police say the suspect is "one of four individuals accused in relation" to the homicide.
Michael Martins was arrested without incident and charged with aggravated assault and forcible confinement. He is being held for a bail hearing and is expected to be transported to Toronto.
Last year, police arrested two other people in connection with homicide.
Ashley Andrews, 28, of Toronto was arrested on May 2, 2013. She faced a number of charges, including accessory after the fact to murder, two counts of obstructing justice, failing to comply with probation, carrying a concealed weapon and possession of cocaine and marijuana.
Lori Ann Crook, 39, also of Toronto, was arrested on April 4, 2013. She was charged with first-degree murder and forcible confinement.
