A man died after being hit by a garbage truck in a laneway near Yonge-Dundas Square early Wednesday morning.

A GFL Environmental Inc. garbage truck was reversing down a one-way alley at 6:25 a.m., when it struck a man who was lying across O'Keefe Lane, a pathway frequently used by pedestrians. Police said they don't know whether the man fell or if he'd been lying there for another reason. The unidentified man believed to be in his 30s died of his injuries.

There was only one person in the truck at the time of the incident. Police said the truck was equipped with a reverse camera, and they're investigating whether the camera was working. They've also collected area surveillance footage to review the incident.

A few witnesses have come forward, but police are looking for others who may have been on the scene at the time.

A coroner has been called and the Toronto Police Traffic Reconstruction unit is investigating.
