The province's Special Investigations Unit has been called in after a man died in hospital following a struggle with Toronto police officers on Monday.

The incident took place at about 8:27 p.m. in the area of Bloor Street West and Christie Street, the SIU said Wednesday in a news release.

The SIU said officers who arrived at the scene arrested Charles McGillivary, 45.

"During the arrest, a physical interaction took place and Mr. McGillivary collapsed," the SIU said in the statement.

Paramedics took McGillivary to Toronto Western Hospital, where he later died.

An autopsy was conducted on Tuesday, but the SIU hasn't released the cause of McGillivary’s death. An SIU spokesperson couldn't be reached for comment.

The agency said it has designated three Toronto police officers as subjects of the investigation. Three investigators and two forensic investigators have been assigned to review the case.

The SIU is asking anyone who may have shot video or photographs of the confrontation to contact the lead investigator at 416-622-1806 or 1-800-787-8529, ext. 1806.

The SIU is an arm's-length agency that investigates cases where people have been injured or died as a result of contact with police. They also investigate allegations of sexual assault against officers.
