A crash involving a five-tonne truck and a minivan on Highway 400 claimed the life of a motorist on Wednesday afternoon.

The collision occurred in the southbound lanes, south of Highway 89, shortly after 1 p.m.

The truck had been parked on the shoulder when a minivan lost control and slammed into its rear, Ontario Provincial Police said.

The driver of the van, a man believed to be in his 50s, was killed in the crash.

The truck driver didn't suffer serious injuries, but was hospitalized after suffering from shock, police said.

Vehicles were rerouted around the accident.

The crash was the second major collision on a 400-series highway in two days.

Over the noon hour on Tuesday, A tractor-trailer rollover on the northbound lanes of Highway 427, near Finch Avenue, caused commuter chaos as the delays continued into the afternoon commute.

The accident happened when the truck slammed into a car, which caused the rig to jack-knife. A dump truck was also involved in the crash.

The driver of the tractor-trailer, a 29-year-old Brampton man, was charged with careless driving.
