TORONTO - A Newmarket man appeared in court on Sunday to face charges in connection with the death of his two-year-old son.

York Region Police say Mario Wint, 29, faces a charge of second degree murder and is due to appear in court again on Jan. 28 to face the allegation.

Police say they were called to a residence in Newmarket north of Toronto on Thursday where they found the boy who was not breathing.

The child was taken to hospital and pronounced dead.

Police arrested Wint on Saturday and say the investigation is ongoing.

Police say they won't release the cause of death to preserve the integrity of the investigation.
