A Toronto councillor says he's "trying to talk some sense" into Mayor Rob Ford's brother, and convince him to run for the city's top political office.
Coun. Giorgio Mammoliti, who resigned from the executive committee last November, said he believes fellow Coun. Doug Ford is "seriously thinking" about entering the already-crowded mayoral race.
"If (Doug's) brother doesn't come back, a candidate needs to enter the race who talks about keeping what we have going with respect to savings," Mammoliti told CP24. "The rest of the candidates are not talking about keeping the agenda going, they are only talking about spending money."
Mammoliti made the comments on Tuesday as city council held its first meeting since Ford announced last week he would enter rehab to seek help for a substance abuse problem.
During Tuesday's meeting, Doug at one point was seen sitting in his brother's seat. A sign that read "Doug" made by Mammoliti was jokingly covering the mayor's name plate while he sat there.
When asked about whether he is officially considering running for mayor, Doug told reporters, "I can't comment on that."
The Ward 2 Etobicoke North councillor has previously said he does not intend for run for re-election in October.
