One person has died and a second is in hospital following a motorcycle collision on Rosedale Valley Road early Thursday morning.

Investigators said the motorcycle crashed near Bayview Avenue at approximately 1 a.m.

The Suzuki GSX1000 sport bike was travelling west at a high speed when the driver lost control around a curve, police said. The bike hit a curb before striking a nearby light pole. Both the 28-year-old man driving the bike and the 20-year-old female passenger were thrown from the bike.

The man, who has not been identified, was pronounced dead on scene. He had an M1 licence for novice riders and wasn't supposed to be driving at night or have a passenger, police said.

The woman was rushed to hospital where she is being treated for life-threatening injuries.

Neighbours told reporters on scene that there are several motorcycle collisions in the area each year, and two makeshift memorials for separate, previous crashes could be seen on Rosedale Valley Road near the crash scene.
