BELLEVILLE, Ont. - A dog that escaped death by wriggling free of its collar after being tied to the door of the Quinte Humane Society shelter in Belleville has been found.

An inspector with the Ontario Society for the Protection of Animals says the animal was left tied by a rope at the back door Thursday evening after the shelter had closed.

The German Shepherd cross fell into the basement entrance of the shelter on Avonlough Road.

Tex Ridder says the dog must have pulled its head through its leash, saving it from hanging itself, and then crawled out of the entrance and ran away.

Ridder says the dog was found by a resident a half-kilometre away on West Moira Street late this morning and returned to the shelter.

He says the dog is OK, despite having spent the night outside, and is being cared for by shelter staff.
